October 29, 2015
I normally keep my charitable activities to myself but I was asked to write a few words about the things I was involved in this October.
October has traditionally been a busy month for my family because of volunteer opportunities and fundraisers for organizations in which we participate.
I have found myself increasingly involved with the Highline Schools Foundation for Excellence, which is the fundraising arm of the school district where Cox Financial is located. I am learning that my time spent here is especially rewarding because my youngest daughter is a third generation Highline School District student, the organization is very well run, extremely efficient, and the other members are a blast to work with. This month we had two events that Cox/Mainspring supported.
The first event was the Brat Trot, which is a 5k run. My wife Jennifer, my daughter Gabriel and I helped set up the kids’ section and stayed most of the day overseeing the volunteers in that part of Olde Burien. The week after that was an Oktoberfest-style auction. Jennifer and I ditched the kid and had ‘date night’ that night. We helped with the cleanup after the party. Between the two events we raised over $110K for the kids.
I also had an opportunity to volunteer for a Chamber event working directly with high school students in October. This was a lunch that was aimed at helping the students prepare for the real world by teaching them job interview skills, handshakes, body language, and looking into someone’s eyes while you are talking to them. It was hosted by the Southwest King County Chamber and was well received by the kids that attended. I was especially impressed when one of the students handed me a resume and inquired about an internship.
I am also involved with the Des Moines Rotary Club, Burien BNI (Business Network International), and Discover Burien, all of which help me stay active in the community and add a layer of satisfaction to my week by knowing that I am working to make the area where we do business a better place.
Yours in service-
